Height: 1.52m on average for males, 1.49m for mares. Color: Bay, dark bay, black, bay dun, black/brown dun, often with a dorsal stripe. It is more powerful and larger than the Žemaitukas. Distribution: Lithuania. This horse has a good temperament, is cooperative and resilient, has endurance, and is uncomplicated, well adapted to harsh climates, and easy to keep. It is used as a saddle horse, for equestrian tourism, in harness, and for farm work. This breed, whose numbers have continued to decrease since the 1990s, is nearing extinction, with only 150 horses and fewer than forty births per year.

The breed's numbers increased at the end of the nineteenth century because the traditional Žemaitukas was no longer powerful enough for farm work. The breed was then crossed with trotters such as the Orlov in northeastern Lithuania, while in the southeast they were crossed with the North Swedish. Then the animals were crossed among themselves, and a stronger, more imposing horse than the Žemaitukas emerged. The two breeds were officially differentiated in 1946, and in 1985 the new breed took the name of Large Žemaitukai.
