Height: 1.45m on average for males, 1.40m for mares. Color: Bay, black, chestnut, gray. The type is not completely homogeneous. It is a small horse with slender legs. Distribution: Moldova. Moldovan horses are resilient and bold; they have endurance and are well adapted to the local climate and environment. It is used as a saddle horse, in harness, and for farm work. It is also used for equestrian tourism and is raised for its meat. There are probably tens of thousands of these horses.

This native horse is the result of a blend of breeds, notably Russian Trotter, Orlov, and Don. It is probably not a separate breed, but a type of horse that one finds just about everywhere in Moldova. It continues to be used as a work animal in its home country.
