Height: 1.45m-1.65m. Color: Often bay, dark bay, sometimes black. The North Swedish Trotter has a small, wide head; broad chest; rather short back; and fairly short legs with slight feathering. The mane and tail are thick. Distribution: Sweden and Norway. It is an energetic and agile horse, calm and cooperative, with endurance and good health. Its trot is excellent. It is essentially bred for trotting races in Scandinavian countries. After a sporting career it is often retrained for recreational riding. The breed, though fairly unknown outside Scandinavia, is doing very well, trotting races being popular in Sweden and Norway. There are around 7,000 horses and 500 births per year.

The North Swedish Trotter is in fact a light variety of the North Swedish Horse, selected for its trot and registered in its own studbook since 1964. It is the only breed of trotter called "coldblood". The breeding of this native breed is shared with Norway. Trotting races on ice were once popular.
