Height: 1.52m on average for males, 1.50m for mares. Color: Black, bay, dark bay. The Sanfratello has a head with a straight profile; a long, muscular neck; a broad chest; short, sloping shoulders; and a wide, round croup. Its mane and tail are thick. Distribution: Sicily, Italy. This is a willing, adaptable, simple, and resilient horse with endurance and sure-footedness. Due to its life in semi-freedom, it has adapted to the sometimes challenging climate and environmental conditions in Sicily. It is essentially used for sporting activities suchas show jumping, but also for trekking where its sure-footedness is an asset. It is also good for pulling carts and light carriages. A native breed, its numbers are still small but are growing because the Sanfratello is beloved by Sicilians. There are around 1,100 horses.

The origins of this horse are rather obscure, but it has been crossed with Eastern horses, notably Barb, Spanish horses, Neapolitans, and English halfbreds. It has also received Nonius blood. It is bred in semi-freedom until it is broken.
