It looks like a miniature saddle horse, with a slender head and large eyes, a wide forehead, slender nose, broad chest, short back, and hard hooves. Distribution: South Africa. It is gentle, agile, easy to handle, and undemanding. These are essentially pets that can pull a small, light cart. The breed is being developed, with only 700 animals registered.

Since 1945 the South African Miniature has been developed from Shetlands and small Arabian stallions. The breed was recognized in 1989. In recent years, American Miniature Horses have been imported.
