The Spanish Barb has a head with the straight or slightly convex profile characteristic of Spanish horses, a wide forehead, sloping shoulders, and a round croup. The hair of the mane and tail is long and thick; it sometimes has a double mane. Distribution: United States. The Spanish Barb is intelligent, bold, and agile. It has endurance and good cow sense. This is a good recreational horse, used for trekking and Western riding. It is rare, with fewer than 2,000 horses.

The Spanish Barb is the result of a project of reconstitution and selection from some thirty horses. Although it greatly resembles the Spanish Mustang, with which it shares the same ancestors, the Spanish Barb is being reconstituted to recover the breed as it was upon its arrival in America, and not as it has become over time through the Spanish Mustang.
