The mane and tail are thick. Distribution: Central Italy. Lively, generous, and adaptable, the Tolfetano is a robust, agile, and sure-footed horse. Naturally selected for a sometimes harsh environment, the breed is simple and resilient. Traditionally used for livestock herding by the butteri, Italian cowboys, it is also a good, versatile recreational horse. It is employed as a lesson horse in riding schools. It is also suitable for light harness work, and is bred for its meat, as well. This native breed is still small in number, with only slightly more than 1,280 individuals in 2012.
繁育历史
The Tolfetano derives its name from the village of Tolfa. This very ancient breed has existed since the Etruscan era. It probably has had Berber and French influences. It is the Italian equestrian work horse of the most ancient type, not having undergone various crossings intended to improve it, as the Maremmano has.
